Mission:

The mission of the P.C.H.S. Library/Media Center is to insure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished by:

1. Providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats.
2. Providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and using information and ideas.
3. Contributing to the students' education of academic excellence shaped by the Biblical Reformed view.
4. Helping to direct and challenge students toward lifetime skills and careers as God's people.

Goals:

1. Provide materials that will enrich and support the curriculum taking into consideration the varied interests, abilities, learning styles and maturity levels of students served.
2. Provide materials that stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literacy appreciation, aesthetic values, higher level thinking skills and ethical standards.
3. Provide materials on opposite sides of controversial issues so that students may, under guidance, develop discernment and critical analysis of all media.
4. Provide materials representative of the various religious, ethnic and cultural groups and their contributions to our American society.
5. Provide a quality selection of Christian fiction.
6. Place principle above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials in order to assure a comprehensive collection.

Objectives:

1. Provide resources to students and teachers with a systematically developed collection that coincides with the curriculum.
2. Provide students and faculty with media services and resources through the AEA.
3. Follow the standards and guidelines set by the Iowa Dept.of Education.
4. Create an atmosphere conducive to learning.
5. Promote effective use of media resources.
6. Keep collection up-to-date and in good condition.
7. Provide instruction and assistance in accessing information in online databases.
8. Maintain an effective relationship with students, staff and community.
9. Direct and challenge students toward lifetime skills and careers as God’s people.

Hours:

The library is open 8 to 4 on Monday to Thursday, and 8 to 3:30 on Friday.

Librarians:

Mrs. Haveman

Mrs. Haveman is in her sixth year as the librarian of Pella Christian High School. She graduated from Pella Christian before receiving a degree in English/Language Arts, Secondary Education with a minor in Communications from Dordt College. She taught 7th grade English at Valley Christian in Bellflower, CA. While there, she attended Azusa Pacific University working on a Master's degree in Curriculum and Education. After moving back to Iowa, she substituted and worked in the library at Pella Christian Grade School before accepting the current position. In 2007, she received a masters of library science degree from the University of Northern Iowa. She is a member of Grace Fellowship CRC where she enjoys teaching the young children in Son Zone as well as performing an occasional drama. She has three boys that keep her very busy as well.

Mrs. Verhey

Mrs. Verhey has been working in the Pella Christian High School Library for the last five years. This year she is in the library on Tuesdays. She is a member of the Garden Club and attends Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she is a Youth Group leader and sings in a variety of groups. She is the proud grandmother of three and enjoys spoiling them as well as reading, decorating and keeping up with friends
 

Policies:

1. Checking Out Materials:
   1. Materials may be checked out for a period of three weeks. Books may be renewed once (for another two week period) unless additional time is needed for a research project.
   2. Certain reference books or materials in high demand may be borrowed overnight only and returned by 8:25 the following school day.
2. Lost Materials:
   1. If a book is lost, a deposit of the retail price of the book must be paid. This amount will be refunded if the book is found.
3. Obligations
   1. Before receiving report cards, all overdue books must be returned and obligations met.
4. Behavior:
   1. Students are expected to be courteous and quiet in the library. Students who fail to cooperate will forfeit the privilege to use the library.
   2. No food or drink is allowed in the library. First offense is a warning and second offense is a detention.
